Led by high-achieving students who have excelled in the course, SI sessions offer collaborative learning, study guides, practice exercises, and proven academic strategies that support student success. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your understanding of course concepts or boost your academic performance, Supplemental Instruction is a valuable resource available to all students.

Supplemental Instruction Facts:

  • Peer facilitated, cooperative student support scheme for all students.
  • Attendance is voluntary but highly recommended.
  • Not a remedial program for “struggling” students, but rather, a program for all students who want to improve their academic performance.

Certain courses have tutors (Supplemental Instruction Leaders) embedded in the classes. The SI Leaders hold weekly study sessions to assist students with challenging course material.

What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free, peer-led academic support program that helps students better understand course material, develop effective study strategies, and improve academic performance. SI sessions are available to all students enrolled in supported courses.

How Does Supplemental Instruction Work?

SI leaders are assigned to a course and attend class sessions each week. One to two times each week, SI leaders conduct regularly scheduled, out-of-class, study sessions that focus on specific course content and learning skills. SI leaders provide materials such as practice worksheets, study guides, and sample quizzes and tests to students during the sessions. SI provides a forum for students to compare notes and discuss subject matter with other students in the class. SI sessions are free, voluntary, and open to all students in the course.

How Do I Know If I Am Enrolled In a Course That Offers SI?

If you would like to know if you are enrolled in a course with this program, you can do one of three things:

  1. Call the COMPASS Center atآ 252-985-5275.
  2. Click on the SI Schedule link at the top of this page.
  3. If a SI Leader sits in your class, you have a SI Leader.

Why Should I Go To SI Sessions?

Research at NCWU indicates that students who attend sessions on a regular basis achieve grades 1/2 to 1 full letter grade higher than those students who do not participate.

Who leads Supplemental Instruction sessions?

SI sessions are led by trained student leaders who have excelled in the course they support. SI Leaders are typically sophomores, juniors, or seniors with a strong academic record and faculty recommendation.

Is Supplemental Instruction only for struggling students?

No. SI is designed for all students who want to strengthen their understanding of course content, improve study habits, and achieve greater academic success. It is not a remedial program.

How much does Supplemental Instruction cost?

Supplemental Instruction sessions are completely free for NCWU students enrolled in supported courses.

How can Supplemental Instruction help improve my grades?

Research at NCWU has shown that students who regularly attend SI sessions often earn grades that are one-half to one full letter grade higher than students who do not participate.

How do I know if my course offers Supplemental Instruction?

Students can check the SI schedule, contact Academic Support Services, or ask their instructor. If an SI Leader attends your class, that course typically offers Supplemental Instruction support.

SI Leaders typically attend class meetings and host one or more study sessions each week throughout the semester to support student learning.
