Please Join us for the Fourth Monday Colloquium with Ben Hiskes

Possibilistic Thinking, Empathy, and Awe in Narratives

In this talk, Ben will be discussing how people cognitively process narratives, and how the narratives we experience can shape our cognitive processes off the page and beyond the screen. This talk will include a discussion of key ideas in the field of narrative cognition, as well as an overview of some of my own relevant research.

Specific topics will include how, when reading narratives, we imagine counterfactual possibilities, empathize with some characters and not others, and experience emotions like “awe” that can open us up to connecting with each other.

The Belt and Road Initiative: Is China a Savior?

A discussion with Dr. Young Kim, Professor of Political Science

Proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a 2013 visit to Kazakhstan, the Belt and Road Initiative (formerly One Belt, One Road) aims to build a pro-China economic network connecting countries across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa, and Europe. Since its launch, the initiative has drawn mixed evaluations. Proponents contend that Chinese investments, free trade agreements, and loans have spurred economic growth in participating countries. Critics, however, warn of potential “debt traps,” leaving them vulnerable to losing control over critical infrastructure. Some analysts further suggest that the initiative may alter the global power dynamics, as economic cooperation between China and partner states could evolve into security partnerships that challenge the United States’ hegemonic status.

With support from the Wilkinson Award, Dr. Kim sought to better understand how the initiative is implemented and perceived in Central Asia.

This talk offers an opportunity to share those insights with the Wesleyan community.
